Why We’re Moving Away from Insurance
At Hummingbird Therapy Group, we are committed to providing thoughtful, ethical, and personalized care to each of our clients. After a lot of thought and consideration , we’ve made the decision to move away from working directly with insurance companies. We understand that this may cause some confusion, so we’d like to share why this change matters—for us as providers, and most importantly, for you as a client.
Client-Centered Care, Not Insurance-Directed Care
Insurance companies often dictate the course of treatment—how long it can last, what’s “medically necessary,” and what’s reimbursable. We believe decisions about your therapy should be made collaboratively between you and your therapist, based on your unique needs and goals—not on a one-size-fits-all basis created by insurance companies.
Insurance Doesn’t Reflect the True Value of Therapy
The reimbursement rates offered by insurance companies often do not take into account the time, skill, and emotional labor that go into each session. As clinicians, we invest deeply in the care we provide—not just during your appointment, but in our preparation, reflection, and continued learning. Insurance is not supportive of that.
We Want to Focus on You—Not Paperwork
Working with insurance requires ongoing justification that your treatment is medically necessary. This includes detailed documentation tailored to insurance guidelines, and frequent administrative back-and-forth. For a small practice like ours, the time and energy spent navigating this system takes away from the time and energy we can spend with our clients. That’s not the kind of care you deserve.
We Prioritize Your Privacy
When using insurance, we’re required to share your personal information, including a mental health diagnosis, sometimes as early as the first session. Insurance companies sometimes consider some diagnoses more deserving of mental health treatment than others.
We believe that therapy should begin with listening, not labeling. Moving to self-pay allows us to protect your privacy and take the time to truly understand your story before determining what, if any, diagnosis may be appropriate.
We understand that this change may impact accessibility for some clients, and we’re happy to provide superbills for potential out-of-network reimbursement. If you have any questions about what this means for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
